Tucked inside the cool, tranquil space of Castelbuono's beautiful Church of the Holy Crucifix — a deconsecrated historic church now dedicated to culture in the heart of the medieval centro storico — one of Italy's most remarkable travelling exhibitions of artisan craftsmanship has returned for its second consecutive year.

Il Gennargentu in Tour — L'Isola nell'Isola (The Island Within the Island) is a project born from more than forty years of celebrating the very finest Italian artisanal tradition. Founded in Palermo by Lorella Deidda — inspired by her deep personal connection to the culture and traditions of her native Sardinia — the project is today carried forward by her daughter Alba Garofalo, whose Sardinian mother and Sicilian father embody the very spirit of the island-meets-island concept at the heart of this extraordinary venture.

A dying art — preserved in every thread

What makes these pieces genuinely precious — beyond their extraordinary beauty — is that they represent a craft tradition that is quietly disappearing from the world. Created by a small, dedicated family team of five or six artisans, each piece requires hundreds of hours of painstaking, stitch-by-stitch work using techniques passed down through generations that are now, heartbreakingly, dying out.

Central to the collection is the ancient Sardinian technique of Pibiones — literally meaning "grains" in Sardinian dialect — in which tiny raised knots of thread are individually wrapped around a needle on the loom, one by one, to create extraordinary three-dimensional raised patterns that you can feel with your fingertips as much as see with your eyes. The technique dates back centuries and its origins are woven into Sardinian mythology — legend says it was the Janas(fairies) who first taught Sardinian women to construct their looms.

The symbolic imagery woven into every piece is equally ancient — rhombuses representing fertility and protection, grapes symbolising hospitality and abundance, geometric forms carrying messages of prosperity and family continuity that predate recorded history. These are not decorative choices. They are a visual language, spoken in thread.

The collection:

🧵 Pure Italian linen textiles — bedspreads, pillowcases, runners, towels and table linens featuring intricate Pibiones designs woven directly into the fabric — not applied, not printed, but woven thread by thread. The quality rivals and in many cases surpasses the finest Italian luxury linen brands — at a fraction of the price.

🏺 Artistic ceramics — handcrafted pieces reflecting centuries of Italian ceramic tradition, each one unique.

💍 Jewellery and design objects — wearable art carrying the same spirit of meticulous craftsmanship.

🪑 Home décor and furnishings — rugs of extraordinary quality, decorative objects and furnishing accessories that would not look out of place in a Sicilian palazzo, a museum — or, indeed, a 16th century monastery guest house. 😊

Everything is entirely handmade. The prices are, remarkably, highly accessible for what they are — a genuine opportunity to acquire pieces of lasting beauty, cultural significance and extraordinary value before this art form disappears entirely.

"Il Gennargentu in Tour - The Island Within the Island" celebrates places where history, identity and tradition continue to inspire outstanding Italian craftsmanship.
