Castelbuono Carnevale 2026
Carnevale in Castelbuono is a welcome period of fun, colour and joy after the brief Sicilian winter and a good excuse to get outdoors for some festivities in the fresh air. The celebrations are focused around the cloisters and courtyard of the former San Francesco church and there’s also a parade of floats through the town. Many people dress up in wild costumes and masks to enjoy the atmosphere incognito.
Feast of St. Joseph 2026 - Festa di San Giuseppe
Saint Joseph’s Day on 19th March 2026 is the focal point of several days of festivity in Castelbuono Sicily. This important religious feast has roots dating back to the 10th century.
In Sicily you can expect many masses, divine rituals and special family meals to give thanks and show gratitude. Heavily decorated home shrines and church altars are decorated with intricate bread sculptures - figures and symbolic motifs often strung together with coloured ribbons and strewn with flowers. These tiered or ‘laddered ‘tables of St. Joseph’ are further enhanced with devotional objects and special foods to give thanks for his blessings.
Castelbuono Infiorata 2026
Every year at the end of May, the streets of Castelbuono in Sicily become a riot of colour as the ‘Infiorata’ festival takes place. ‘Castelbuono in Bloom’ is a flower festival where the streets are literally paved with floral displays, usually in the form of pictures ‘painted’ with petals, buds and foliage. Via Sant’Anna, the principal road leading from Piazza Margherita up to the castle becomes a pedestrian zone allowing the ground to be completely covered in flowers. The designs are created by groups of local school children who stay up overnight to painstakingly place the flowers.
Historical Sicilian Costume Parade
The medieval towns of Sicily come together in Castelbuono for an historical costume parade through the town, along with bands of drummers, musicians, and expert flag-throwers. All the different eras of Sicily’s history are represented with magnificent clothing and finery. Culminating at the castle, where the square then becomes the venue for a jaw-dropping flag-throwing competition - choreographed and synchronised to perfection. Medieval music and dancing creates an incredible up-beat atmosphere. This event is not to be missed.
Sicilian Cart Parade
Be prepared to have your senses dazzled at the parade of historical Sicilian Carts in Castelbuono. Brightly painted wooden carts are paraded through the cobbled streets of the historical town centre pulled by beautifully decorated horses and their costumed owners.
Festa di San Giovanni, Castelbuono
Every year in June, Castelbuono holds a traditional Broad Bean and Potato Festival on the feast day of San Giovanni (St. John).
In the historical centre of the town, dried broad beans and potatoes are boiled in "quarare" (large copper kettles) heated over wood fires, and then offered free of charge to all passers-by. The atmosphere around town is enriched by bands of musicians.
This charming festival has pagan origins relating to ancient rituals to encourage a successful harvest.
The bonfires of San Giovanni in Castelbuono specifically originate from the tradition of lighting fires in memory of the sacrilege that Julian the Apostate committed by burning the bones of St. John to extinguish his cult. Since the feast of San Giovanni coincided with the harvest, people began to put broad beans on the fire, as a token of gratitude and a rite of prosperity. The tasting of broad beans, boiled potatoes, and onions, accompanied by a good wine, represents a propitiatory rite to inaugurate the harvest. In the past, on the the feast of San Giovanni, the rites of "comparatico" and "commaratico" were of considerable importance - ancient customs of Castelbuono that represent the institution of a kind of sacred bond, through which one becomes "cumpari," a very strong bond that, through San Giovanni, was presented to God himself.

The focal date is 26th July, but it’s actually at least a week’s worth of celebrations, processions, music, food, fireworks over the castle and religious masses. The town is packed with people - both locals and visitors alike - and everyone is involved.
