A once-in-a-century milestone for one of Europe's oldest and most celebrated road races.
First run in 1912, the Giro Podistico Internazionale di Castelbuono — known locally and affectionately as "A Cursa" — is one of the oldest road races in Europe, recognised in 2021 with the prestigious Heritage Plaque from World Athletics. This year, it reaches its extraordinary 100th edition.
The race attracts world-class elite athletes — Olympic and European championship medallists among them. In 2025, the 99th edition was won by Yemaneberhan "Yeman" Crippa, European Champion and Italian record holder, ending a remarkable 36-year wait for an Italian victory — the previous Italian winner having been Salvatore Bettiol back in 1989. Before Crippa, African athletes had dominated the event for 17 consecutive years.
The race follows a historic 1,134 metre circuit through the medieval streets of Castelbuono, with the heart of the action centred on the beautiful Piazza Margherita. The day begins with a Baby Run in the morning, followed by afternoon races, building to the elite top runner race in the evening — an electric atmosphere in the ancient piazza.
The centenary celebrations extend beyond the race itself, with a photographic exhibition tracing 100 years of the Giro's history, youth races, and special events throughout the day.
The 26th July also marks the feast day of Castelbuono's patron saint, Sant'Anna — making this one of the most festive and atmospheric days in the town's entire calendar. Do not miss it.
