Castelbuono Carnevale 2026

  • Carnevale Storico di Castelbuono Piazza Margherita / Cine Teatro Astra Castelbuono, Sicily Italy (map)

One of Sicily's most authentic and celebrated carnivals — and now officially recognised as one of Italy's Historic Carnivals by the Italian Ministry of Culture.

The Carnevale of Castelbuono combines two unique elements that make it unlike any other carnival in Sicily: the spectacular allegorical float parade and the satirical Veglione evenings.

The allegorical floats — elaborate, colourful moving works of art — parade through the main corso of the town on Carnival Sunday and Martedì Grasso (Shrove Tuesday), culminating in Piazza Margherita in an explosion of colour and music. Groups from neighbouring towns join the local float makers, adding to the spectacle.

The Veglione di Carnevale is the carnival's other great tradition — an evening of sharp local satire performed at the Cine Teatro Astra by beloved local groups including I Sarviett Gnutticati and I Quattru da Maiddra. These groups perform their masked shows with hilarious parodies targeting well-known local characters and events — a tradition with roots in the court jesters who once entertained the Ventimiglia princes of Castelbuono. Boldaugust

The Children's Carnival in Piazza Margherita brings the whole family together with fancy dress parades, animation, games and sweets — a joyful, inclusive celebration at the heart of the community.

This year's edition carries special significance: the Carnevale Storico di Castelbuono has been officially recognised among the Carnevali Storici d'Italia by the MiBACT — Italy's Ministry of Culture — certifying the historical, cultural and community value of a tradition that has been renewed year after year by the dedication of local associations and the whole town.

Veglione tickets from €7-10. Float parade free to attend.
